This long-time student can play!
Like a lot of long-time NEHI students, my grandson surely can play. Great skating, puckhandling, passing, shooting and checking skills didn't come overnight, however. No, he started with us like a lot of other 4-year olds, eating snow and feeling his way through our Learn-to-skate and then Learn-to-play programs. From there he attended our weekly clinics and summer camps, eventually working his way through our NEHI Jr High School and HS Prep teams. Confidence is everything, of course. And in this regard, Tony C feels pretty good about himself, having led his teams in scoring for the past 5-years -- as a junior and senior in high school, on his prep school squad, and more recently as a freshman and sophomore on his college team. (This past winter he established school scoring records, and he's on pace to break some career records as only a junior.) So have a look, and then we'll talk about this a little more...

 

Now, how to get from eating snow to scoring goals...

As I suggested earlier, great skills and smarts don't come overnight. Nor do they come by accident. Top scientists will even tell you that a well taught, hard working athlete can far surpass one who solely depends on his or her genetics.

Still, our conversation right now shouldn't be about elite athletes. No, our aim -- yours and mine together -- should be to help your young one have some successes, really enjoy the experience of going to the rink, and really look forward to coming back, again and again.

All that said, everything I do as a teaching coach is by design. Oh, the kids will never know it, but there's a purpose to absolutely everything I'll do with them, from the fall to early-spring. But, rather than tell you, let me show you how things work in my clinics (oooops, this video was produced a few years ago, and the deposit noted at the end has changed a little)...
